Autumn exhibitions and festivals
The cold north wind and falling leaves - in autumn the water of the Venetian lagoon turns emerald green and the city is still a bustle with art exhibitions, like the Biennale of Architecture at the Gardens in Castello (closing on November 21st). It’s the best time of year to visit to the Biennale. The international pavillions are set within the lush green gardens whose vitality brings you back in touch with nature in this otherwise stone-dominated city-scape. The scent of moss fills the air and a blaze of fall colours surrounds you as you walk through the exhibition along leaf-covered paths taking in the design projects and video installations.
Two other exhibitions will close at the end of November as well. On the island of St. George, Fondazione Cini hosts a magnificent exhibition of works by Giambattista Piranesi. There are more than 250 original engravings and reproductions of objects that Piranesi designed, many of which have never been displayed before, such as the wonderful tripods. The exhibition at the Correr Museum is dedicated to Giacomo Favretto, an artist who was known as the “innovator” on the Venetian artistic scene during the second half of the nineteenth century. With eighty paintings, this is the very first exhibition completely devoted to the artist since 1899. November closes with an important celebration on the 21st, the day of Madonna della Salute (Virgin of Health). It’s one of the most popular religious feast days and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary who saved Venice from plague in 1630. The charm of this celebration is undeniable: thousands of people cross the votive bridge that spans the Grand Canal to light candles in honour of the Virgin Mary in the church by Baldassarre Longhena. The octagonal layout of the building, the smell of incense, chanting and thousands of lit candles create a truly unique atmosphere. Winter is on the doorstep, the city grows quiet, the soft sound of water lapping over the stones is finally audible. Autumn and winter brides love the warm colours of leaves and for their floral decorations: red and orange tones shimmer in the mist.
