On a bright day in early August, we meet Guia Camerino, granddaughter of the Venetian designer behind Roberta di Camerino, in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. From there, we set off across the Lagoon in her topetta, a traditional flat-bottomed Venetian boat, heading towards the island of Le Vignole.
As soon as we reach the island, the scenery changes completely. Far from Venice’s most frequently travelled routes, an old military building known as La Polveriera lies hidden within a garden of tamarisks, reeds and acacia trees.
This is a place deeply connected to the Lagoon, where vegetation, water and silence reveal a more intimate and unexpected side of Venice.
A short walk beneath the trees leads to the artichoke fields, where Guia has established an important cultivation of the Sant’Erasmo violet artichoke, now protected as a Slow Food Presidium.
For anyone who has never tasted them, these artichokes are highly recommended: they are a local delicacy and one of the finest products of the Venetian Lagoon.
Sitting beneath the acacia trees, Guia tells me that her grandmother chose this small haven between the sea and the Lagoon as her private retreat during the 1970s.
Here, in the tranquillity of the garden, Giuliana, the designer’s real name, would sit, reflect and find inspiration for her creations. It is no coincidence that the colours of the Lagoon often appeared in her velvets and silks.
Thanks to her vision, this place has retained its natural, rural and unspoilt character over the years. In accordance with her grandmother’s wishes, Guia continues to care for and preserve it today.
